![]() The film is also overlong and suffers from some major pacing issues in its second half, often stalling when it should be at its most propulsive and subsequently lacking the requisite tension, gravitas and emotional heft for it to have the intended impact. Unfortunately it never quite lives up to that early promise, and in its latter stages, the film is hampered by a script that seems more determined with delivering iconic lines and moments than in properly examining Patrizia’s descent into revenge. There are some great scenes in these early stages – including a magnificent encounter between senior Gucci brothers Rodolfo and Aldo (Irons and Pacino respectively) – and the stage seems to be being set for something which could be rather special. In its 1954 version (which was the standard one until 1988), the album is basically a Judy Garland album, and a classic one at that.From a dramatic point of view, the film is strongest in its first hour – as we are first introduced to the various players and watch Patrizia slowly ingratiate herself into the clan, while also learning of some of the many rifts in the Gucci empire. Leonard Gershe and an uncredited Roger Edens ( Garland's longtime associate who had written much special material for her in the past and could not be named because he was still under contract at MGM) assembled it and wrote connective material, resulting in a tour de force. ![]() The other highlight of the album is the 15-minute "Born in a Trunk" medley, a virtual musical autobiography that seems to refer as much to Garland herself as to the character she plays in the movie. ![]() Gaga and Cooper collaborated on a soundtrack album with a range of country musicians, including Lucas Nelson, who also starred in the film as a member of Coopers band. Five of those are good tunes, but one, the Oscar-nominated torch song "The Man That Got Away," became a standard and a signature song for Garland. A star is born a soundtrack combined music of different styles from ballads to soft rock and even occasionally appearing hip-hop and sentimental jazz in the spirit of the 30-40s. In this original version, it consists of seven tracks, six of them written by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin. ![]() As with her film career, this was her first recording since 1950's Summer Stock soundtrack to achieve commercial success it peaked at number four on Billboard's LP chart and never went out of print over the next 50 years, with an expanded version released in 1988 and an even longer one in 2004. The soundtrack album, which, in this, its initial release, consisted solely of Garland vocal performances (two of them, "Here's What I'm Here For" and "Lose That Long Face," cut from the film shortly after it opened), marked another kind of comeback for her.
